tagore's salon is run by laura and freddie, who met studying MPhils in South Asian Studies. they both read a lot. freddie realised the need for a place like tagore's salon when he returned, for the fifth time in a row, from India with twenty books in his suitcase that he knew he would not be able to find in the UK. his interests lie in the theological and the universal (whatever that means). laura is trying to read a book from every country in the world (60/195), and is particularly interested in working class histories and anti-colonial literature. she previously worked in India with Kashmiri organisations, in Ramallah with Palestinian scholars, and in Canada on anti-colonial peacebuilding theories. she is now a reproductive rights advocate working with Afrofeminist organisations in West Africa.

later in 2025 we hope to open a bookshop and community centre dedicated to books in translation and non-western literature. there is a great deal of literature that is not published in the UK, solely because of inaccessible funding flows and publishing norms. this is especially true of translated literature. our aim is to bring the best of those books which elsewhere would not be found without a great deal of effort and cost.
